چکیده

This paper proposes an error diffusion method for improvement of gray scale rendition in plasma display panel(PDP). The conventional error diffusion method in PDP, which includes data separation for display and error part, may have a danger of wrong calculation of error to diffuse. The proposed approach suppressed the halftone artifact by calculating the error using the gray level itself. Thus, the proposed method accurately reproduces the gray level by driving the average error to zero. Experimental results, obtained using two benchmark images, nine wellknown test images, and 104 random HDTV images, illustrated that the proposed method has smaller halftone artifacts than the conventional method does.

Recent Advances in Digital Halftoning and Inverse Halftoning Methods

Halftoning is the rendition of continuous-tone pictures on displays, paper or other media that are capable of producing only two levels. In digital halftoning, we perform the gray scale to bilevel conversion digitally using software or hardware. In the last 3 decades, several algorithms have evolved for halftoning. Examples of algorithms include ordered dither, error diffusion, blue noise masks...

Measurement of printer parameters for model-based halftoning

We present a new approach for estimating printer model parameters that can be applied to a wide variety of laser printers. Recently developed "model-based" digital halftoning techniques depend on accurate printer models to produce high quality images using standard laser printers (typically 300 dpi). Since printer characteristics vary considerably, e.g. write-black vs. write-white laser printer...

Halftoning via Error Diffusion using Circular Dot-overlap Model

Circular dot-overlap model is one of the simplest printer models, which is used to predict the actual gray levels of printed images. Model-based halftoning can produce print outputs which can render the gray levels of original input image more correctly and keep more detail in the outputs. Cluster-dot halftoning is a classical method used to minimize dot gain. In this paper, the model-based hal...

Inverse halftoning and kernel estimation for error diffusion

Two different approaches in the inverse halftoning of error-diffused images are considered. The first approach uses linear filtering and statistical smoothing that reconstructs a gray-scale image from a given error-diffused image. The second approach can be viewed as a projection operation, where one assumes the error diffusion kernel is known, and finds a gray-scale image that will be halftone...

Multi-Level Halftoning by IGS Quantization

Improved gray-scale (IGS) quantization is a known method for re-quantizing digital gray-scale images for data compression while producing halftones by adding a level of randomness to improve visual quality of the resultant images. In this paper, first, analyzing the IGS quantizing operations reveals the capability of conserving a DC signal level of a source image through the quantization. Then,...
